Oral and Nonverbal Communication in the UAE (Dubai) Due to the UAE s high standard of living and growth in trade, many people from all around the world come to the UAE striving for a better life and jobs that pay well. There are around 4.4 million people in the country, with only 15--20% of them being citizens and 96% being Muslims. Hofstede’s analysis of the United Arab Emirates indicates that religion (Islam) plays an important role in people’s lives. Islam is the official and majority religion and includes almost every aspect of life. Education, laws, food, clothes, daily routines and even conversations are all strongly influenced by Islam. The usual reply to this greeting is â€Å"Wa alaikum a salam† meaning â€Å"and peace be upon you†. The best way to greet in the UAE is to wait for your counterpart to initiate the greeting because there are different ways of greeting, such as to shake hands, exchange kisses between men on each cheek, etc. How to communicate Do not discuss women; even do not ask how a wife or a daughter is doing. The most appropriate topic is neutral, for example, sport. Before a business meeting you need to learn full names and how they have to be addressed. Arabs usually address people by their first name. So, Ekaterina Rechkin will be addressed as Ms. Ekaterina. You always need to remember that the answer â€Å"yes† in Arabic culture usually means possibly. Telephone conversations Telecommunication services in the UAE are admirable. Public telephone is the most expanded and convenient medium to get connected with outside world.
